Posters

The last class in was devoted, in part, to self reflection on the work as a whole. We were given few questions relating to the ideas we worked on, the changes we made throughout the process, what we liked and disliked, and the changes we wish to introduce after going through the whole process from the moment we started to the present class.

Then we were asked to go out of class, to the hallway where our work was displayed, and critique four of our colleagues’ posters. To our surprise, some visitors made an unannounced visit to our hallway while we were busy looking at each others’ posters. The visitors turned out to be prominent people in Qatar; princesses and wives of ambassadors from various countries.

We took advantage of the golden opportunity to give them an idea about our work; that is to say explain what our work is and how it reached the present stage.

  1. It’s very interesting to see the drastic differences between the two posters, but also some of the very subtle similarities… I believe it shows that they’re designed by the same person. So, here’s my short critique from class:

    Minimalist:
    – Strength: choice of colors. They’re attractive and they match one another.
    – Weakness: too many separate images (the four versions), I think one can get the idea across.
    – Typography: I like the fact that you didn’t use the title on it’s own, but maybe a different typeface would’ve worked better.

    Maximalist:
    – Strength: idea of telling a story by different pages of a notebook; it pulls the viewer closer.
    – Weakness: the stages of the notebook opening and closing could be worked on in terms of logical order.
    – Typography: too subtle, it’s difficult to notice. One has to really look for the title to see it.

Overall, I think the maximalist is stronger in many ways. Great work!

  2. For the minimalist poster: one strength is the repetition of hair in all quadrants. A weakness might be that the 2 illustrations on the right side aren’t connected the same way that the 2 illustrations on the left are. I think the title would be clearer if it was bigger than the rest of the phrase. Color makes it stand out, but the difference is very subtle. But overall, your color choices are are great.

For the maximalist poster: one strength is the concept, and the way you approached this poster. One weakness may be that that there aren’t enough drawings; there are too many empty pages. You could still keep the empty pages if you placed them all towards the bottom of the poster- she still hasn’t filled in those pages, she’s going to leave and doesn’t know what the future holds. The type isn’t clear at all, could’ve been written out bigger on the page. I think the colors seem a little desaturated.
